Salem derailment July 31, 1997

PISE and PRPI

At 21:13 ET on July 31, 1997, a wheel bearing on a freight car on eastbound Conrail manifest train PRPI-0 disintegrated causing that car to derail into the path of westbound manifest train PISE-1 at Salem, OH. All told the 71st through 89th cars of train PRPI-0 derailed. Train PRPI-0 was powered by C40-8W 6075 and SD50 6832 and consisted of 92 loads and 16 empties that totaled 10,134 tons. These 19 cars derailed into the path of train PISE-1 which was powered by SD60 6843 and GP40-2's 3291, 3292, and 3286 and consisted of 60 loads and 47 empties that totaled 8,560 tons. The four lead locomotives and first 31 cars on train PISE-1 derailed and caught fire. There were no serious injuries to either crew reported.
